The Lone Tree
I saw you so many times before
Passing you by on my way
To an engagement
Something lovely
Spellbinding
Something I started to feel
Before I reached it
You just stood there
A lone tree
In such a vast land
But when love left me
With empty picture frames
And tangled ambitions
I went for a drive
And for the first time
I viewed you
Observing your stance
As though you were reaching out
To touch something
Trying with all your want
But not succeeding
For there was nothing close enough
I saw the way your leaves trembled
In the wind
The way one would float off
And it was like you wanted it to return
Creaking your limbs
Little pebbles at your stem
Nature’s hem
I saw visions of children peeking
Circling you in citrus melodies
As you waved like a giant mobile
And you longed to rock them to sleep
For them to love you
Drawing you in their hearts
Keeping you in mind
So from time to time
They’d come back
Even if it was just to lean on
To dream against
My hand shaded my eyes
As I squinted through tears
Suffering to gaze at you
The sun bursting out of every
Space you granted
I smiled
In our uniting
I gathered you as a friend
Sticking you into my mind’s wicker basket
Amidst plucked posies
My fondness soaring up into your abundant leaves
As you dropped one upon me
And we laughed
